I don't even want to know what the "feels like" temps are expected to be. Add in the rain and it will be a sauna here.
For the first time in many years, we do not have a pool in our backyard and, with this heat, we are missing it so much! Simpson hated the pool with a passion. On the hottest days in Miami, we would carry him into the pool and hold him in our arms while we walked around in the water. He was quite happy to do that but if we let go of him so he could swim on his own, he would swim right to the stairs, get out and stay as far away from the pool as possible for the rest of the day. Sonder, on the other hand, absolutely loves to be in the pool - either with us or by himself. He literally swims laps and he is the only dog I know of that will/can swim underwater. If we were in the pool, Sonder was in the pool. Many times, he would jump in by himself for a bit of a cool down swim. Whenever we walk by the pool at the end of our street in Nichada, he always pulls the leash in that direction and I know he would love to jump in and swim if I just gave him the opportunity. I don't think it would go over too well with the neighbors though.
I stopped running with the dogs a few weeks ago because the heat and humidity really seemed to be negatively affecting Simpson. We would finish a run and he would just plop down on the tile floor in the kitchen and pant for (what seemed to me) too long. Sonder didn't have a problem with the heat (that dog is the energizer bunny!) but I couldn't take one and not the other so both stayed home. I realized last night, that with Simpson gone, I could now take Sonder to run with me. We had a good two mile run this morning and I could tell he was happy to be out and getting some exercise after being confined to the house & leash since Monday afternoon. It was sad having only him with me but I had a lot of good memories of Simpson to think about during the run. All of the guards must know what happened because they all came out of their respective guardhouses, bowed and said something in Thai to me as I ran by. One of the homes on our route has a water garden in the front yard and I usually stop there during the run so the dogs could get a drink. Sonder would daintily lap up his water but Simpson would suck down about 1/2 of the pond in a minute or two. I always wondered if he ever swallowed any of the little fish. This morning, we stopped at the pond and Sonder just sniffed around for a few seconds and wanted to continue on. I can tell he is lonely so I am going to arrange for him to have a play date on Friday afternoon with a friend's dog. The friend also has a pool so it will be an extra special treat for him. He did eat a little this morning (the first time since Simpson died) so maybe he is starting to move on.
A portion of Kevin's trip was canceled so he will return home late Tuesday night - an unexpected but very welcome surprise. He will only be home for a few days before he has to leave again but at least it is something. I have my ceramics class this evening and hope this is the class in which we are taught how to make a vase. I think we will continue to make pieces this week and next and then begin the glazing and second firing process.
Have a great Wednesday!
